Two groups representing leading IT and electronics industry brands are hosting a workshop in Vancouver on 20 May to discuss responsible tin sourcing. The meeting is organized by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) and the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) and ties in with ITRI’s International Tin Conference, being held in the same location on 17 – 19 May.

In a joint invitation to participants, the organizations said that “GeSI and EICC members are increasingly concerned about social and environmental practices by some minerals suppliers in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) supply chain. The metals of concern in this area are Tantalum, Tin, Cobalt, Tungsten and Gold. Our industry has recently been engaged in determining methodologies to address the traceability of Tantalum in the ICT supply chain. Our members believe that mining activities that contribute to conflict are unacceptable. We are now beginning our engagement to understand challenges concerning the traceability of Tin in the ICT supply chain. We are joining many other tin supply chain participants to take action that will address responsible sourcing.”
