Amalgamated Metal Corporation is to resume dialogue with the UK-based NGO Global Witness, which has been highly critical of its trade links with DR Congo, The Times newpaper reported. AMC announced on 18 September that its smelter subsidiary Thaisarco was suspending all purchases of tin ore from the country as a result of “misleading and bad publicity” affecting everyone doing business there.
According to the Times report “AMC’s threat to pull out of Congo appears to have surprised Global Witness, which is resuming discussions with the company. A spokesman for Global Witness said that it would rather that AMC continued to buy Congolese tin.”
