The project Supporting Responsible and Inclusive Mining Governance in Maniema Province has already begun to make a tangible impact. In ITSCI-monitored mine sites Atondo and Salukwango, awareness sessions on human rights, gender equality, and the fight against gender-based violence have started to transform perceptions and practices.

Mitwaba Comité Local de Suivi leads successful awareness campaign against child labour in mining

In response to the persistent issue of child labour on mining sites, the local multi-stakeholder committee of Mitwaba town, Haut-Katanga Province, DRC, with facilitation from ITSCI, spearheaded a comprehensive awareness campaign throughout May 2025. The campaign targeted key mine sites in Mitwaba territory and expanded its reach into broader community spaces such as markets and churches.

Safeguarding Children in Mining Communities: Awareness-Raising of the DRC Mining Code in South Kivu Province

One of the most powerful outcomes of this project has been the increased awareness of mining communities in Nyabibwe and Numbi towns, South Kivu Province. Artisanal miners, having gained a deeper understanding of the legal frameworks protecting children and the inherent risks for children at mine sites, took steps to address the issue.

Collaborative efforts for the demobilisation of non-state armed group from3T mine sites in South Kivu Province, DRC

The presence of, and ongoing monitoring by ITSCI and state services at several mine sites and the set-up of a local multi-stakeholder committee in the Nindja chiefdom, South Kivu Province, DRC, since 2023 helped to address security risks related to the presence of non-state armed group at and in the vicinity of non-ITSCI mines in the Lukoma area and resulted in the reduction of non-state armed groups interference in mining and in risk resolution.

Reducing security-related incidents involving public security forces in Maniema Province

In October 2024, ITSCI continued its commitment to improving security in the mining sector by working to reduce the number of incidents involving public security forces. Through a series of capacity-building sessions, ITSCI engaged with key authorities from the public security forces to address concerns surrounding their involvement in mining activities and to propose training at a local level. These sessions were attended by key stakeholder who each highlighted their objectives and roles in the mining sector, emphasising the importance of upholding the law in preventing security-related incidents.
